Introduction

Soft tissue release targets specific areas of tension within an individual muscle with the aim of removing scar tissue and adhesion, fascial restrictions, to relieve muscular tension and pain. This unit forms part of the ‘Certificate in Sports Performance Massage, © and is available to all therapists with a minimum level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in sports massage, or a related field.

  About this unit

Following a brief review of the anatomy and physiology of soft tissue, and the changes in the feel of the tissues, resulting from heavy training loads or injury, is followed by a discussion of how soft tissue release (STR) techniques can achieve positive results. The two basic movements of STR are taught (active and passive) and then participants move into practical sessions, applying STR skills and techniques to different body areas. By the end of the unit you should feel confident in applying STR techniques and be able to integrate them into your own treatment sessions.

The unit will cover

  • The physiology of how this STR effects the soft tissues
  • Cautions and contra-indications of use
  • Passive and active upper and lower body STR techniques
